Urban Planning Considerations: Challenging current social/political conditions and industry regulations via architectural and Spatial Measures – increasing gross floor area of developments (increasing density) while increasing standards of living.

The studio aimed to question the prevailing issues facing Singapore’s densification process. This involved challenging the following:
A) The increasing privatization of prime locations (both in terms of its natural qualities and historical elements)
B) The fixed regulation that defines the built up area of the residential design to occupy a maximum of 60% of the plot (thus an attempt to increase built up area while increasing the quality of the living spaces and interstitial communal spaces)
C) The lack of way finding and identity within the current public residential estates of Singapore (HDB Flats).
D) The assimilation of natural features and historical elements into the design of Public residential projects while solving the issues of the existing context.
This was achieved via:
Assembling the public residential plots in relation to and to have relationships with the natural features (Placement and Assemblage of Elements on Site), and having the studio decided urban design guidelines adhere to existing topography (Engaging topography), allowing the entire district to be defined by the uniqueness of its natural context. This would help to create a sense of way finding and define the estates clearly.
The studio also researched into ways of dealing with and manipulating the existing circumstance of the essential highway encapsulating the site, to ensure the negative side effects of the highway could be either negated or harvested for the use of the site (Dealing with Existing Context). Thus research was done to consider how the site’s unique issue could be part of and help define the site as a unique public residential plot.
